Veneers

Cosmetic veneers are beautiful, thin, custom-made coverings applied to the face side of front teeth. They are used to correct irregular shapes, worn enamel, discoloration, chipping and undesirable spaces.  The primary use for veneers is esthetic, but they can offer functional, protective benefits as well, if teeth are badly damaged.

To make a veneer, the tooth is usually prepared by shaving a thin layer of enamel from its surface.  This layer is then replaced by the veneer itself, which re-establishes the original contour of the tooth along with any desired changes.  
Porcelain is the most durable material used for veneers.  This type of veneer is fabricated by skilled laboratory technicians and requires at least two office visits. The thinness of these veneers is the secret to their beauty.  The refractive index and translucency of thin porcelain is identical to enamel.  Because porcelain doesn’t stain, well-cared-for veneers can retain their original appearance for decades.

Composite resin is also used for veneers, most commonly for partial coverage when a tooth is chipped or otherwise requires minimal treatment.  This composite resin can be used for full veneer coverage as well, usually when porcelain is being delayed for some reason.  This type of veneer is made directly on the tooth, in a single appointment.  Its life expectancy is somewhat less than porcelain’s.
